Do-oshi (The Naked Festival of Bishamon-sama)

An extraordinary New Year's festival heated-up by almost naked men

Bishamondo Hall enshrines Vaisravana (Bishamonten in Japanese), a Buddhist deity. At the evening festival held on the 3rd of January, do-oshi (literally: body pushing) is carried out to pray for good health and the year's good harvest. Men dressed only in loincloths parade around within the hall to drive away evil spirits, carrying men aged twenty-five and forty-two above their heads. Accompanists add excitement by shouting words of encouragement at the men and beating on wooden doors.
