Maruwa Store
"Maruwa Store," where fishermen make marine products themselves
"Maruwa Store" quietly stands behind the post office of the Himezu village located in the northwest of Sado. At first glance the store is rather difficult to recognize as a store, but is well known to local people as a store that deals in marine products. Maruwa Store, fishermen's household that has been engaged in fishing through generations from old days, manages everything by itself, from the landing of fish to sales. It is because Maruwa Store is fishermen's household that it can process fresh fish immediately after landing. The same old production methods and the tastes of the products make the store popular not only among local people but also among people of other parts of the island.
The Himezu village is known for its fishing industry.
Along with prospering Sado Gold Mine, the Himezu village came into being and developed as a source of food supply. Its home waters are said to be the best of all fishing grounds off Sado Island, and enjoy an established reputation for providing high-quality fishes and shellfishes.
In addition, because the waters off Sado Island are the place where a warm current (Tsushima Current) and a cold current (Liman Current) meet, fishermen are actively engaged in harvesting squids. During the period from June through August when squid fishing is at its peak, Maruwa Store's fishing boat transforms itself into a boat specializing in squid fishing. In the Himezu village blessed with the environment best fit for fishery, Maruwa Store provides large numbers of people with high-quality materials harvested in its locality.
Maruwa Store preserves the traditional tastes.
The popular product "Squid Ichyaboshi (squids salted and dried overnight)" is made into an exquisitely finished product by drying fresh squids under the sun into its half-raw state immediately after landing so that they will become more tasteful than raw squids and softer than thoroughly dried squids.
"Sakuraboshi," a choice delicacy of sukesodara (Alaska pollock), as its name implies, is said to have been named for the way sukesodara were being dried during the season of cherry blossoms falling and fluttering about. The more you crunch it, the more enjoyment the taste will give you.
Such products as "Noshiika (flattened dried squids)," "Sakuraboshi" and "Ichiyaboshi" are so popular among people who have returned home for the holidays that they become sold out during the Bon festival season. Such products as "Ika-no-yoichizuke (squids preserved in malt)," "Misozuke (squids preserved in miso)," "Suika (squids preserved in vinegar)" are popular products that are eaten by local people habitually.
Preserving the traditional simple ways of seasoning with "salt, shoyu (soy sauce) and miso (soybean paste)," Maruwa Store pleases a great number of people, no worse than before.
